Stryker's Facing Strong Headwinds

Stock Tickers

SYK JNJ MDT

Regardless of how logic-based an argument may be, readers will go to great lengths to undermine any bearish call on their favorite stock.

While I wasn't overly negative towards Stryker (SYK) following its July quarter, I wasn't buying the Street's excitement towards the stock, which in my opinion carried considerable risks, especially at its (then) 52-week high of around $71.

Since that article, shares of Stryker have fallen by as much as 6%. And while the stock has recovered from those losses, Stryker is nonetheless trading around the same level as when I last discussed it.

IBM Lacks Offensive Power

Stock Tickers

IBM HPQ MSFT ORCL CRM

Back in May, as shares of IBM (IBM) broke above well above $200 per share, I argued that the bellwether company had gotten overrated.

While there's no denying that Big Blue is still posting solid annual profits, revenue has been completely non-existent. This is despite management spending upwards of $16 billion over the past five years in acquisitions.

Interestingly, though, unlike, say, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and Microsoft (MSFT), which are constantly in analysts' crosshairs for criticism, the Street has never raised a voice towards IBM to complain about its underperformance. Nor has the stock ever gotten cheap, at least until recently.

Abbott Must Balance Growth and Profits

ABT ABBV JNJ MDT

With shares of Abbott Laboratories (ABT) down by more than 15% since May, investors in the healthcare conglomerate are still trying to figure out whether management was correct in its decision earlier this year to separate the company's strong drug business into a new spinoff entity called AbbVie (ABBV).

While the decision to break up the company was initially met with excitement, the remaining portions of Abbott, which consists of (among others) the devices and nutrition businesses, have struggled with revenue growth.

5 High Dividend Stocks Insiders Love

AT&T logo

According to economic theory, company insiders should avoid buying stock and in fact should generally tend towards selling shares (and diversifying their wealth) unless they are confident in the company’s prospects. Insider purchases should therefore signal this confidence, and in fact studies generally show a small outperformance effect for stocks bought by insiders (read our analysis of studies on insider trading). We track insider purchases and like to take a brief look at those where the purchase is large enough to be significant to see if the company might be a good buy.

Read on for our quick take on five high yield stocks which at least one insider has bought recently:

AdTran's Not Cheap, But There's Still Value

ADTN CSCO CIEN ALU

Shares of AdTran (ADTN) are trading up more than 2% today after the networking and communications gear maker reported second-quarter results late Tuesday that beat Wall Street estimates.

The company, which had suffered due to weak carrier spending earned 17 cents per share, which is down 48% year over year. Still, this was enough to beat Street estimates by one penny.

Likewise, though revenue dipped 12% year over year to $162 million, the company still managed to top analysts' estimates of $154 million. The company benefited greatly from improvements in the company's internetworking and broadband access products.

"During the quarter we benefited from market share gains, the geographic expansion we began last year and an improved spending environment," AdTran CEO Tom Stanton said in a statement.
